Pieskowa Skała Castle

Distance: 66 km

Pieskowa Skała Castle is located 30 km northwest of Krakow, in the heart of the Ojców National Park. The origins of Pieskowa Skała date back to the times of King Kazimierz the Great, who ordered the construction of a guard post here to protect the trade route leading from Krakow to Silesia. The present appearance of Pieskowa Skała is largely due to a thorough reconstruction and expansion carried out around 1578 at the initiative of Stanisław Szafraniec. At that time, an impressive Renaissance residence with an arcaded courtyard and a scenic loggia was created. The courtyard’s rich sculptural decoration includes a gallery of naturalistic masks, cartouches with coats of arms, and portals.
